Work on new WP theme while have another WP active

  • I have my webite, https://www.kristenritchie.com with Virb.com.
    I have my blog, https://www.kristenritchie.com/blog with WP.

    I bought a new WP template that I want to be both my website and blog under https://www.kristenritchie.com.

    Where do I start with this mess? How do I begin working on my new WP template without it being live? Right now, when I view my new template, it takes on the form of my blog (b/c my blog is WP), so a)how do I work on my new WP template as a website and not something that is taking the look of my WP blog and b)how do I work on it without it being live?

  • Hi Kristen,

    You could try contacting your hosting provider to see if they support sub-folder installations of WordPress. Most modern WordPress hosting providers have a one click option for creating a staging copy of your site to make changes in.

    If they don’t offer that sort of feature you could always export your blog’s content using the Tools Export Screen and then import it to a new free WordPress site hosted on another platform for experimentation.
