Working with different sizes of post images

I want to shift to srcset for the images in my posts. There is one plugin out there but it is giving me errors.
with all the thumbnail functions you can get the different size images of the featured images, but I don’t understand how to use these with the images embedded in the posts themselves. I’ve searched online a lot but not found any guidance
