Worpress site with multiple domains and admin areas

  • Hi, I am hoping someone may be able to help me work through the best strategy to develop this site.

    The site I am working on is a portal type site that has:

    1/ A landing page with a specific main menu and content including links to five areas of the site that will have their own domain names.

    2/ The five individual areas will be very similar in structure to the main portal but with their own main menus and content. Originally they where 5 individual sites.

    3/ All Five sites need to have individual administrators that only have access to their particular part of the site.

    What I would like to do is to make them all part of the one wordpress installation and DB but the only way I can see to do this at the moment is to have multiple installs of wordpress. This would mean that any updates etc. would need to be undertaken 6 times.

    Any help appreciated.

    Thank you for your response. This looks like it may be what I need. Still trying to get my head around the fine details though!

    As all the sites will have a similar look (theme) to each other but different content and main menus would the best way to make this work be to upload the same theme 6 times each with a different name? Or is there some simpler way?

    If you’re using a Network, then you only upload a theme or plugin to the main site, and it will then be “shared” with all of the other sites.

    The main thing to remember is that with a Network, there’s only one code-base, not multiple installations like you’d have if you did everything separately.

    So if all sites choose to use the same theme will the changes they make individually only affect their site i.e. logo, menu and content changes?

    Anything that’s set as an option in the site will stay only on that site.

    Of course, that assumes that the theme has been coded the right way, but the vast majority of them have been. ??

    Thanks! I think the best thing for me to do is set up a network with a couple of sample sites and see how I go (fingers crossed).
