I am highly skeptical of load speed-enhancing plugins generally, as there is typically much more to be configured “behind the scenes” in most cases.

This plugin works incredibly well. You simply install, activate, and forget it. By default it will begin to preload assets as a user hovers over a link, making for near-instant loads on all environments that I have tested.
