• I’ve just upgraded to 2.5, and to my frustraition the text-editor fails any attempt to upload images to my posts. I get the red text stating that upload failed (sorry, I have norwegian language installed, so I don’t know the exact english error msg).

It seams though, that the images are being uploaded to the server – which does not help mutch for users with no ftp access.

  • Even if the problem is on the host side, it shouldn’t be happening at all. You shouldn’t have to poke around for hours and hours trying to figure out why the application doesn’t work properly. We’re not the techies!

What surprises me is that this version has been out a couple months now. I’m just now updating to it. This is a big enough problem that there should be a fix for it that doesn’t require calling one’s hosting company!

I should have read the forum before upgrading. I’m seriously thinking of downgrading.

I wonder if the problem is due to the way the upgrade was done. I went from 2.3.2 directly to 2.5.1 using the very tedious long method, which required me to manually delete and move files around. I hated it but I wanted to make sure that nothing went wrong, even if I did have to spend 2 hours doing the upgrade.

For those who are not able to upload your images, did you do the quick 3-step upgrade or, rather, the long way?

So far, I haven’t had any problems with my test posts and image uploads using the tediously long method at upgrading. I’m waiting to see if the other authors of my site will encounter any problems when they do their posts and image uploads. Problems may or may not show up then.

My problem isn’t an upgrade – 2.5.1 is the first version I’ve installed. I have, however, done other blogs using 2.3 so it’s not like I’m a complete newbie.

And I’m still having image upload problems!!!

In my research, I came across these WordPress instructions:

    “Prerequisite for Uploading Files:
In order to use all these tools, you have to change the chmod of wp-content folder to 777. If you have not changed permissions in order to write in wp-content folder, you will not be able to use the uploader. If you do not know how to change this value, please read Changing File Permissions.”

What the heck is this? I can’t find any chmod in my wp-content folder. And if I do, do I change its name to 777? Can there be a little more explicit direction here?

Someone above said it right: This shouldn’t have to be so complicated. We’re not the coders here.

    #adunate

chmod is a unix/linux command used to set file permissions.
If you have ftp access to your webhost you can use “FlashFXP” to set the permissions remotely. Other programs may support it to.

    Setting permissions using FlashFXP:
    1. Connect to your host
    2. Select target folder
    3. Right click on that folder and choose “Attributes (CHMOD)” from the menu.
    4. check “Write” under group and public, and you will see the number in the Permissions textbox change to “777”

    Hope it helped.

The wordpress team is not to blame, its quite normal that you have to do this when you need to change/create/delete files on a webhost. It is for security that php/java scripts cant alter your webhost files.
