WP 3 Alpha/Beta

How can semi skilled users get development releases?
I’ve googled numerous patches for multi blogs on non MU, but don’t want that struggle.

So, what I think you told me is negative advice.
You may want to take a breather and re-think your thinking. Take a peek at this and see if there is anything that might jar loose a thought or idea (maybe you already did) https://trac.mu.www.ads-software.com/browser/trunk/README.txt
Then consider installing 3.0 at the root level instead of a sub-directory, and expanding the multi-user features from there. You may want to make sure you are clear on the DNS wildcard record, and what it actually does for you – the short version from the mu readme:
DNS
===
If you want to host blogs of the form https://blog.domain.tld/ where
domain.tld is the domain name of your machine then you must add a
wildcard record to your DNS records. This usually means adding a “*” hostname record pointing at your webserver in your DNS configuration tool. Matt has a more detailed explanation: https://ma.tt/2003/10/10/wildcard-dns-and-sub-domains/Also from the mu readme – and as andrea_r already mentioned -you may want to check that ServerAlias is correctly configured in your virtual host directives for httpd.conf.
And again, as fun as it is, you are still working with an Alpha release. I’m not saying it doesn’t work, I’m just saying it gives you some time to work it out before it’s stable and reliable.
Just an after thought after re-reading. The first time I encountered this;
“Firefox has detected that the server is redirecting the request for this address in a way that will never complete.”
…was immediately after replacing the .htaccess and wp-config contents, and attempting to log back in. Closing Firefox, deleting the cache and trying again, solved the issue.
I should also clarify that my particular test installation is at the moment, using the sub-directory option rather than the sub-domain method simply because this particular test server is DynDns’d, and the account does not allow wildcards. Other than that, my blog network functions are working as expected so far.
Clayton, thanks so much. You’re a genius!
This whole thing went SO smoothly thanks to this thread. The only snag I hit was the server redirect problem. It’s working fine in IE, so I’m sure once I restart firefox with a cleared cache it will be fine too.

UPDATE: Semi-success
Thanks to andrea_r and ClaytonJames for trying to get my head on right.Revisit to Hostgator support spelled out the detail “Add a subdomain name *, then point the document root to the same directory as the domain that WPMU [or WP3] is installed on. That will create the necessary entries (DNS and Apache).”
I had not pointed correctly before, and the prior attempt vanished from cpanel.
So I now have two subdomains created by WP3 on first domain. Now, I still have problem of regaining login to the other domain where I wanted to set up WP3 as folders. Restarting FireFox did not fix. I don’t think installing WP3 below the root is reason, as I had previously reached dashboard, but not the SuperAmin version.
UPDATE: success in both setup modes
Unexplained mysteries — after being locked out of the second domain for over a day, I was able to login and make add-on blog in sub folder. First domain working nicely with blogs as subdomains.
So, now, I can get back to designing.I’m on alpha, but have read that 3 beta is due out tomorrow.
I thought the Mu side of WP3 was going to be setup the same way as the original MU install? doing it this way seems a lil complicated lol
You must notice that it’s still in development process.
The WordPress Beta Tester plugin mentioned by @kpdesign doesn’t seem to work for WordPress MU. I’m at WPMU version 2.9.2 and when I select “bleeding edge nightlies” in the plugin’s settings, I still get the message that I “have the latest version of WordPress MU. You do not need to upgrade”.
Can anyone share their experiences with this plugin on a WPMU installation?
At a guess, since there are no more MU nightlies, as it were, it’s flailing.
I would think you’d need to manually upgrade to 3.0-nightly and from there you can use the plugin.
Thanks Ipstenu, that makes sense at this stage, though I would still hope that the numerous WPMU installations out there get an automatic update option when WP 3.0 goes into production. Following your note I decided to start from scratch with a new installation. So far so good
I’m about 99% sure that if you’d copied the WP 3.0 files up over your 2.9.2 MU build, it would have upgraded just fine ?? I’ll find out when it’s time to upgrade, though ?? I have an MU waiting for the marriage.
“I would still hope that the numerous WPMU installations out there get an automatic update option when WP 3.0 goes into production.”
As far as I know, when 3.0 comes out, that’s exactly what will happen. It;s just that the “mu version” will be a direct copy of 3.0.
Many of the site admins I know prefer to manually upgrade though.

I’m gonna give it a try. I let you know how it goes. I’m a freelancer and I use WordPress MU for a number of projects. I’d really like to setup a way from it. I’ll just import a couple of blogs to my localhost install, then copy WordPress 3.0 over it. If this works I’ll be really quite happy.
Hi,
I am new to WP, and learned WP3 will be coming soon. So I started to try WP3-alpha today. All the setup were done without any problem, and successfully create 1 additional site besides the main site. But I have encounter one slight problem: I can not create “menu” for the main site which is the site I install in the root directory.
(I can create “menu” in the additional site)Does anyone know how to solve this?
And will a user register on one site be able to log in to another site in the same network?
Thank you!
The register on the main site, always. then they can be added as a user to any blog in the network if they need more than subscriber status. when logged in, they are logged in to *all*.
