WP 3.0 and Nextgen Gallery Plugin

  • I just upgraded to WP 3.0. The upgrade went without a hitch. As usual, I deactivate all my plugins prior to the upgrade. Typically I re-activate them all at once by checking the box and mass activate. However, this time I lost my admin panel when I did this and got a “fatal error” relating to “memory size exhausted”. After chasing the line in the subject php and found nothing wrong, I decided to go into my control panel and rename the plugins folder, which deactivated all the plugins. This fixed my problem with accessing my admin panel. So I started activating my plugins one at a time to see which one caused the crash. It turned out to be “Nextgen Gallery”. So I am no longer using Nextgen.

    I am posting this as a help to others and advise of a bug in 3.0. I will also post a similar posting with Nextgen.

    Hope this helps if anyone else has a problem with Nextgen or any other plugin crashing their admin panel.

  • NexgGen is one of the most popular plugin on WordPress. I’ve got it installed on several client sites. I hope the developers clear this out soon because I’m not gonna update my sites that run this plugin.

    As it turns out, the problem wasn’t with WP-3.0. Sorry for getting you concerned. The problem is with my host relative to limitimg the memory size. I am with Bluehost.

    Go in to your php.ini file through your Cpanel. Open the file and modify the “memory limit”. Depending on your host, it may look like:

    memory_limit = 32M ; Maximum amount of memory a script may consume (32MB)

    or:

    max_memory = 32MB

    Change the “32” to “64” and save the file. That should fix the problem. If not, try “128” instead of “64”.

    Again, sorry for the confusion. It seems that with my host they periodically change the numbers to default, which is 32MB. I occassionally have to go in and change it back. This time I suppose it just coincindentally happen with the WP-3.0 upgrade.
