Suddenly all of my WordPress sites (all of which use Wordfence) are preventing me from either editing/updating widgets or adding menu items. The error console is giving me a Server 500 error indicating that it can’t load the admin-ajax.php file.

The hosting company says it’s not a server issue. Some of the links I’ve found indicate it might be Wordfence blocking the file. I’ve disabled Wordfence, but that didn’t resolve it.

I thought I’d check, just to sure. Also, Wordfence keeps asking me repeatedly to review terms of service. I OK it, but each time I go in, it asks again. Maybe this is related?

Hi @jgold723, thanks for reaching out to us over this.

Naturally, as the issue persists with Wordfence disabled, I’m not inclined to think it’s a case where Learning Mode will help. The issue itself along with the repeated requests for reviewing the ToS suggests a Javascript issue that we have seen before.

It may help in sites recently updated to WordPress 5.5 or above to install the Enable jQuery Migrate Helper plugin below to see if the issue is resolved:

If the above isn’t applicable, disable all plugins other than Wordfence to see if you’re able to confirm the installation. If so, reactivate your other plugins one by one to see if any further issues with Wordfence arise. To do so I recommend the Health Check & Troubleshooting plugin which allows you to disable all plugins and switch to a default theme, but only for your user to prevent downtime for other site visitors.

Let me know how you get on!

    Thanks,

    Peter.

Thank you. The problem appears to be linked to the disappearance of the /wp-admin/includes/ajax-actions.php which was missing from all of my WordPress sites. I’m not sure how this happened, but I’m exploring it with the hosting company.

That’s good that you were able to get to the bottom of it @jgold723, best of luck with your investigations.

If you require any further assistance with Wordfence going forward, by all means start a new topic any time and we’ll be glad to help.

    Peter.
