wp-admin and page not found (404)

  • I’m having a weird problem with WordPress. If I am logged into WP and access some page of the site, when I return to WP I can no longer access it. Every attempt brings me to a 404 page. After several workarounds, I discovered that if I clear the browser’s cookies I can get access to wp-admin again. However, every time I access a page from the site, I am unable to access WP.

    I disabled all the plugins, recreated .htaccess and put wordpress into debug mode to find issue. No luck.

  • I see that you are using Cloudflare. Maybe it’s something regarding the service you’re using that flags your browser as inappropriate to enter the website ? That’s why it resets when you clear all your cookies etc maybe.

    Try with a different browser or an incognito mode that doesn’t load any extensions in your browser like ad blockers etc and try to view your site again just in case something triggers Cloudfare and it keeps you out.

    I have already used other browsers (Firefox, Chrome, Opera) and disabled the extensions, but it did not work. Even if you pause Cloudflare the issue continues.

    Every time I access some post, I am unable to access wp-admin and have to clear browser’s cookies again.

    Something curious also happens when I access legacy shtml static pages. After clearing the cookies, I access the pages. However, if I access some page generated by WordPress, I can no longer access the shtml pages. The browser is directed to a 404 page generated by WordPress.

    One clarification: shtml static pages only give 404 error when using www in URLs. If URL does not have www, static pages load normally.
