• I build my site using a subdomain during development while the older site continued live. The WP site was dev.example.com and was point to a folder on the server /folder/. When I was ready to launch the site I pointed the https://www.example.com url to the folder (/folder/). Everything works fine on the frontend, including images, etc. However, I can not access the dashboard. I have tried /wp-admin/ and /wp-login/.

When I go to https://www.example.com/wp-admin I am redirected to the home page and the url string in the browser is: www.example.com/wp-login.php/?redirect_to=http%3A%2F%2Fdev.example.com%2Fwp-admin%2F&reauth=1

I believe I followed all of the step on https://codex.www.ads-software.com/Moving_WordPress, but must have missed one. If someone has the solution, I would greatly appreciate it!

    Thanks Tara.

I have attempted to change the site url in the past and just attempted again. When I change to https://www.example.com, the admin is inaccessible as described above. When I change it back to dev.example.com I can then access the backend, but certain plugins such as a sitemap XML generator no long function properly.

I would love to be able to use https://www.example.com/wp-admin for backend access

Did you change the directory name where your sub-domain resides, so it matches your current set-up?

Similar thing happened to me when I changed from domain.com/WPress to domain.com/travel – I had go into server (via FTP) and change the name of the directory to /travel.
Then all worked again (except a HOME link on the WP pages, which somehow was defined inside the template…).

Webbettle thanks for your response. Unfortunately, I haven’t renamed the folder.
