wp-admin page not loading?

  • First off, just wanted to say that after 3 years of using WP, this is the first occasion I’ve ever encountered where I was totally and thoroughly stumped by a technical issue that wasn’t either resolved with a quick Google search or a topic search via these forums:

    My wp-admin page won’t load.

    This is a recent development. I noticed interstitial loading problems earlier this weekend, but could eventually login with enough page refreshes. Now that doesn’t do anything at all. Which leads me to think that this could be a server or hosting issue.

    As I run the Dreamhost support gauntlet (blech!), I though I’d post here as well for thoughts on the matter too.

  • white pages indicate a PHP error somewhere. Check your error_log if you have one. Check your server logs. Check that the host hasnt made any recent changes.

    and fyi, the white page I just saw, thats loaded. its white but its not a “page loading” issue.

    Thanks for the speedy response, Whooami. Could you please advise as to what I should be looking for within my error.log file?

    sure ?? the last line actually unless you get a gazillion hits a second.

    and unless your host changed the setting, most dont, its error_log

    Apparently, Dreamhost is one of those odd ducks that does change their setting. Of course. ??

    Besides the expected “file not found” errors that related to an old version of the site, I did notice two interesting entries.

    So, the interesting turn this morning as that the entire site went white on me. The first step in diagnosing was to disable all plugins via FTP. (In my searching the forums, I stumbled on that nifty little trick of just renaming the plugins dir, which did the trick nicely.)

    The weird part is that I’ve only been able to successfully reinstall maybe a third of the original plugins I had running. Site is back up and running, but my access to wp-admin doesn’t feel reliable…sometimes it’s fine and sometimes I get the blank page.

    Checking the site error logs, I’m seeing what I believe is an unusual amount of activity. Here’s a sample for a half-hour period…

    thats the cached feeds from your dashboard. there are a LOT of them …

    Interesting…but I’m guessing that this isn’t normal, right?

    well, its normal in that magpie rss caches stuff in the db, its not normal that you would see that error.

    one thing you can do is go in via phpmyadmin, and locate that .. its going to be in your options table, and try and delete that. You can safely delete all those cache entries, in fact. Just be careful because there is other stuff in there thats vital to your blog, and its not delineated well.

    someone ought to write a plugin that cleans out that rss cache.

    I’m having a similar problem. My admin dashboard won’t load, but other admin pages will if I go to them directly. For example, I can’t get to https://stupidgamer.com/wp-admin, but I can get to https://stupidgamer.com/wp-admin/themes.php. The dashboard just loads a white page on me.

    Thanks again, Whooami. I think you were on the right track…

    So, the weirdest thing: I was looking at my Dreamhost hosting settings for my domain and noticed that for some weird reason, my PHP version was set to some funky modified 4.x version rather 5.2.x. After changing that, everything has been fine. I would have *never* changed that, so I’m confused on how that could’ve happened.

    But, never one to be satisified with an easy fix, I would be curious as to WHY the PHP version would cause issues. Anyone care to enlighten me?

    [I’m going to mark this issue as resolved as soon as I feel the site has stabilized…so another day or two perhaps.]

    I am not sure of your exact problem but more me the wordpress admin wont load. I’m using Safari 3.1.1 on Mac OS X Leopard (10.5.2). The admin used to work and it just stopped working yesterday. I am running WP 2.5. Thanks ahead of time for any help.

    I don’t get it. My admin page will not load either. I have WordPress v. 2.0.5. Have the same version on 2 other blogs, which work fine. This one I can go to the blog, but when I try to go to admin, here are the messages I get every time:

    I solved the problem with deactivating the “Sociable” plugin. Hope this helps!

    I’m unable to login to my wp-admin page as well, however, these steps do not resolve my issue … I goofed somewhere. I keep getting this message:

    Error 500 – Internal server error

    An internal server error has occured!
    Please try again later.

    It happened all of a sudden when I updated the URL in my User Profile from https://www.msbunn.com to https://www.msbunn.com/archives-all. Help!
