• Hi everyone,

I’m new to WordPress and to the world of self-hosted website building, so it’s been quite difficult understanding how everything works. Nonetheless the website has been set up, using data exported from WordPress.com. However I have just purchased a domain from GoDaddy and inserted it into BOTH ‘WordPress address URL’ and ‘site address URL’ (is there where I went wrong?) into my settings on my www.ads-software.com account. It then said the session was timed out and I was required to log in again – after refreshing, wp-admin won’t load at all.

    I then read this forum:
    https://www.ads-software.com/support/topic/i-changed-the-domain-name-and-now-i-cant-access-wp-admin?replies=5

I followed the steps on phpMyAdmin and changed home and siteurl back to https://localhost:8888/wp-admin/. The site loaded, however there was no theme or images and was simply just a bunch of words (the site title, etc). I changed home and siteurl back to the domain name and now it won’t load again.

Since I’m a beginner at this and had fiddled around with some of the coding on phpMyAdmin without too much knowledge on this subject or its jargon, I was wondering if I had made any mistakes during the process. Is this site behaviour normal? My domain is lookingforsteph.com.

Thank you so much for your time!

OK, so there where some things that I didn’t quite get. Just to check.

    1. You had a wordpress.com site, which you exported to a localhost,
    2. Then you bought a domain and now you want to move your localhost site to your Goddady hosting?
    3. If that is correct take a look at this: https://codex.www.ads-software.com/Moving_WordPress

Let me know how you get on!

    Hi Joseph,

I watched this Youtube tutorial that showed how to install www.ads-software.com onto my laptop. I used MAMP and phpMyAdmin which I’m assuming is my current localhost/hosting site?

I then bought a domain from GoDaddy without hosting.

Does my situation fall under the category of ‘Changing Your Domain Name and URLs’? I can’t log in as wp-admin won’t load (and everything mentioned in the first post), so I’m not sure how to proceed.

    Thank you for the reply!

A localhost is exactly what is sounds like, local. Meaning it is only accessible from your laptop, if you want others to be able to access your site you will need to purchase a hosting plan.

Godaddy actually has wordpress specific hosting for as low as $3.99 a month, this also comes with a free domain. You should be able to get your previously purchased domain transferred over. check it out here: godaddy.com/hosting/wordpress-hosting.aspx

    Hope that helps

I have now bought a hosting plan from GoDaddy and decided to use their service to set up a new WordPress site. I still can’t access my localhost, so I can’t export any data.

No it won’t cause any problems. If you can get your local site working again the go to Tools > Export in your old sites dashboard. That is a very easy way to get all the posts and pages, etc. from your old site. Then go to Tools > Import on your new site’s dashboard and upload the file.

    Happy to help ??

Sorry, I edited the post after I realised the domain was up and running. Referring back to the above, I still can’t access my localhost so I can’t export any data.

Ok, well you could export your local site’s database and then import that into your new one, if you have a lot of data, but exporting the database will export theme and plugin settings as well.

I tried using MySQRL but for some reason there’s no popup or option to save the data as a .SQRL file when I export. It just shows the text in a box. It might be perhaps the localhost’s phpMyAdmin is connected to MAMP and the version is 4.4.9? The formatting is different to what it looks like what it does on GoDaddy’s website. Also if somehow I can get the localhost to work again and I can export the data, do I just change the wp-config file to the new GoDaddy hosting username and password?

Please disregard the above, I’ve decided to simply start over. Thank you so much for all your help and patience!
