wp.api.models has no models in it

we’re trying to use the wordpress rest api with backbone but our wp.api.models has NO models in it. The documentation makes it look simple but everything depends upon those models being present.

and shows all the models that should be visible below but when we access wp.api there are several data members and functions in there but both Models and Collections are empty.
