Running 2 different WP sites, both using 3.2.1. Different hosts. Both acting up in different ways almost simultaneously.

First site I installed from scratch and developed in Dec/Jan and has run fine since. Sometime in the past 24 hours a widget (a slideshow) has disappeared from the static home page. Passwords were re-set for HR purposes yesterday, but otherwise site wasnt changed. The Widget appears in the Dash, and all settings are correct/unchanged from before. I even tried replacing the widget area with PHP in the code itself with no change. This site has no blog/comment functionality.

Second site I’ve been customizing a theme for since last week. Starting yesterday, the StatusPress Twitter feed has been sporadically dumping, and starting today, is now listing the 2010 theme as the active theme in the dash. The child theme I built and activated displays correctly in the browser, but isnt even on the list of installed themes in the dash. I’m inheriting the site from someone else – has a ton of old spam comments.

Not finding any ‘current issues’ online but have heard stuff on Twitter about WP acting up for others.

    Any help/advice/resources please?

  • Have you tried:

    – deactivating all plugins to see if this resolves the problem. If this works, re-activate the plugins one by one until you find the problematic plugin(s).

    – switching to the Twenty Eleven theme to rule out any theme-specific problems.

resetting the plugins folder by FTP or PhpMyAdmin. Sometimes, an apparently inactive plugin can still cause problems.

Thanks Esmi. This would explain both site’s problems then? It just seems too coincidental that there be such problems within a day of each other on unrelated sites, you know?

Well, to be honest, those steps are WP Troubleshooting 101. They would help to rule out the most obvious culprits and since the symptoms are slightly different on each site, you could have unfortunately encountered 2 totally unconnected issues.

Because the sites are hosted with different companies, a hack seems unlikely (if that’s what you were worried about). Still possible but pretty unlikely. Ditto some sort of database issue. My money would be on a couple of problematic plugins.

    You were right.

The slideshow had an update that doesnt work with 3.2.1. Downgraded and that was solved. Other one was all ‘operator error’ ??

    Thanks for your help!

    No problem ??
