• Hello,

Last Saturday (7th April 2007) I transferred by blogs from https://evolvingminds.wordpress.com/ to my own domain (registered and hosted by BlueHost.com) at https://blogs.koolwal.net/.

I just exported all my blogs from my WP account and imported them to my own domain so they were exactly same initially. It took one day for Google to index my blog site.

    The problem:
I do realize that I will take some hit on my PR due to transfer of the domain. However, even though my new domain is indexed now, it won’t show the articles in the search results even if I give the exact title…is this a normal behavior?
For example, I have a posting with title “Install Splashy on Debian Stable”, when I give the exact search name in the Google, the posting on my previous site (https://evolvingminds.wordpress.com/) shows up but the same posting does not show up on my new domain.

    Any ideas?

Also is it advisable to keep my original WP blog site with all the articles in it. Will search engines penalize my new domain for finding duplicate articles? Should I remove all the articles from my WP blogs?

  • It will take Google a bit of time before it indexes the whole site, especially if the site’s new. If you want to have the search traffic go to your new site instead the one on WP.com, you probably DO want to close the one on WP.com (there’s probably options to set the blog to private or something w/o ‘closing’ the site). Not sure if keeping it open will penalize your site though.

I just realized that Last Saturday was 5th April 2008 and not 7th April as I mention in the beginning of the post.

    Sorry about that.

You’ll want to wipe content off your old blog, as Google penalises duplicate content. It will take time for Google to pick up all your posts, sometimes weeks. PageRank only updates every couple of months. I think there’s an update planned in about a month.

You can help it along, by opening an account with Google Webmaster Tools, and uploading a sitemap. Get the WordPress plugin google sitemap generator, which automatically generates a new sitemap everytime you post, and pings all the major search engines when your site is updated.

If I post every day, google picks up my new posts immediately, which is amazing really.

Thanks Report-Gisol.com. I have already done the Webmaster Tools/Sitemap thing. I also installed stiemap generator plugin. Now I will wait for the results. I think you are right, I should hide my contents from the old blogs.
