• We’re on WordPress 2.0.2 for a bunch of blogs.

Lately, when I’ve created new blogs using Fantastico, I’ve noticed the new install doesn’t include the ‘uploads’ folder in /wp-content.

Net result is that before I can upload images, I first need to manually create new folders for /uploads/ and then /2006/ and finally /06 for the month of June.

I worry that I’ll need to manually create new subfolders for each month.

Any idea what’s causing the uploads/2006/ to not get set up automatically??

    Thanks

  • Make the wp-content folder writable and WP will create all the subfolders for the uploads. Also, you can define in Options > MIsc. where to upload files and what folder structure do you prefer.

but why doesn’t WordPress automatically create a writable file folder structure for me as it’s done for my past WordPress blogs?

Instead, I get this: Unable to create directory /home/sysop/public_html/derosier/wp-content/uploads/2006/06. Is its parent directory writable by the server?

I know what that message means and I can manually make the fix, but I hadn’t had to do that for my earlier WP blogs.

Earlier WP versions probably had different method (path) of uploading. You have to change permission on ONE single folder, the rest is created. parent = wp-content

so from 2.0.2 on, i’ll need to manually create, inside /wp-content/, a folder for /uploads/?

Do I also need to manually create ‘2006’ and new folders for each month ??

Why don’t you read more carefully?
I said: IF wp-content if writable you do NOT have to create anything, WP will do it for you.

And BTW, for 2.0.2 it was the same.

OK. Sorry. I’m new at this.
There’s nothing in my Fantastico install process that lets me set permissions for uploads folder.

And under Options > Miscellaneous, there’s no place to make folder writable.

So, how do I set wp-content writable from the getgo, besides the process of manually making the change post-installation? Thanks for the help.

Do you have FTP access? Or, if Fantastico – do you have cPanel for administering your site?

Both, but I’ve been using ftp because it’s easier.

Then you can change the permission with either of them. Normally, the permissions on your wp-content folder (as on any folder) is 755. Change it to 777.

Works fine, but do you know why I need to create the ‘uploads’ folder and set permissions in order to upload images. Those are two steps I hadn’t had to do when building WP blogs for the past several months. Again, thanks Moshu

We seem to go around in circles ??
You do NOT have to create the uploads folder – that’s what I am trying to tell you from the beginning. If after wp-content being writable WP doesn’t create that folder – then there is something wrong with your setup. All the time I was talking about the folder called wp-content.

I am having the same problem. Although my content folder is writeable!
