WP default gallery captions not displaying

Hi. I’ve been away from WP for sometime. Now back and trying to incorporate galleries into my blog. For one, is it ok to use different gallery plug-ins on different pages? I have a main gallery page that I will use lazyest gallery on, but the people page needs just the basic WP gallery. However, captions are not displaying in my WP gallery except on rollover and I can’t find where to edit this! In the stylesheet, the captions appear to be normal, and the settings say nothing about the WP gallery. Help much appreciated. Thank you!
