Wp e-commerce product references

I am building an online store using the wp e-commerce plugin (3.8.12.1). Does anyone know of an easy way to add reference numbers to my products so that I can see them when an order is placed? I’m not using shipwire so could I use the SKU box to put a reference in or will that just cause problems? Seems like a simple thing but I can’t see anywhere to do this other than adding it to the product name which just looks kinda messy.
