• Somewhere in the WP literature I thought I saw that WP could be installed on a stand alone PC. True? Does it make any sense? I don’t have a blog or a server. I’m new to this blog idea but may want to use it in a business.

What is a tag? Examples of use?

Thanks for the useful information. (If somebody sends me a MAC, I don’t know why, I’d like that very much.)

I’m starting from scratch so there is nothing to backup. For WP my computer is still a green field. Does that simplify the procedure in any way?

Regarding the procedure you have given, I assume that the “Backup” steps are not necessary (I’ve nothing to back up). Also, there is nothing to restore. So, the part about installing XAMPP is probably not right for my situation as written.

Finally, where does a brand new, empty of data MYSQL data base come from?

It comes from XAMPP. Start there.

WordPress requires a server with PHP enabled as well as a MySQL server. You can run it on your home computer. However, you have to have your computer set up with all of the right “tools” before you can start running WordPress.

Thank you. I read the post by Kafkaesqui and he supplied a procedure to install on my PC. Could you list the “right tools” for me please?

rounsavell: you might like to take a look at the english-language forum here: https://www.apachefriends.org/f/viewforum.php?f=16

If you search through the back posts, you’ll find a ton of good information pertaining to using apache et al on a win box. Try that first, see how you get on. The biggest hangup is likely to be settings in the httpd.conf file.

For some directed help, try https://www.techpatterns.com – there are several people there who will be happy to answer questions on the basic apache etc. setup.

I will eventually be writing a tutorial for installing xampp on a win pc (which will be posted on techpatterns eventually). However, time constraints have got in the way for the moment. Believe me when I say that if I can do this, anyone can do this, though.

[Another thought: if you are running winxp pro, it comes with a server of some sort. Have you tried simply initializing it? I don’t know that it works OOB with wp, but I’m thinking it probably should….]

There is nothing complicated about installing XAMPP.
    Go to this page: https://www.apachefriends.org/en/xampp-windows.html#641
and click under the “XAMPP Windows 1.4.12 ” the “Installer” package. It does everything, you just have to watch and enjoy ??

Thanks, I needed this info too. Doug

All you need is xampp (on Windows or Linux – I’ve used it on both but prefer Linux). A new install of WP 1.5 takes way less than five minutes once xampp is running and an empty db is created. It also makes a lot of sense to test away from the live blog. I now have a test 1.5 that I can restore a live 1.2.2 database into and then upgrade (switching plug-ins off first). I’m keeping it roughly in sync with the live blog. Great for testing 1.5 on real data.

Can someone tell me how to setup the database?
