WP Hosting? MT switch?

I migrated from MT to WP last spring. I’ll try to answer you questions.

First of all, I was troubled by this statement:

If I do, I can no longer get MT without paying for it, so I"d prefer to switch to WP.

You can still get a “dummied down” version of MT 3.x, for free, but it won’t have any tech support (isn’t that what the forum is for anyway), and you are restricted to only one author and only three blogs. Download it here.

Is it hard to switch from MT to WP?

PapaScott has an MT to WP conversion script that I have successfully used on my own site and on several of my clients’ sites to migrate MT entries to WP. The comments can be dodgy, as some of them ended up on the wrong entry, but that was easily fixed. Overall I was pleased with how the script handled the conversion.

I’m a CSS HTML moron. Can I use the same template?

It **can** be done, but it’s probably just as easy to go ahead and modify the CSS file that comes with WordPress, keeping the WordPress elements as they appear in the index.php file — which other than your comment boxes, is the ONLY (yes, you read it right) template you really need to change in order to use WordPress. One template. Of course, if you want other static pages on your site, as I and many others have, you will want to make a copy of your index.php file once you have it the way you want it, and modify it for those extra pages (e.g., About Me, Contact, 100 Things, etc.). Hopefully this will make sense once you download and install WP and start working with it.

Are there any hosts that support WP that anyone can suggest?

Almost any web hosting company that offers PHP and MySQL can support WordPress. I can recommend the following which I know to support WP; others will probably be along shortly to add more choices!

1. AffordableHOST
(my blog and five of my other sites have been hosted here for four trouble-free years)
2. My own web hosting service with very generous bandwidth limitations
3. Global Internet (where my web design site is hosted)

Switch from MT: I haven’t, but many people have, and have done so successfully. As such, there is a lot of help around, not least here in the forums.

Template: Probably – I can’t see the one you have.

Hosts: Do you mean as in a free blog ready to go, or hosts as in good known hosts ?

I need at least 300 mb of space and 15 GB of transfer. I’m not looking for a free host.

Wouldn’t want anyone jumping to conclusions that I recommended a host for my own personal gain.

I currently use icdsoft. I agree, they are an exceptional host and their customer service can’t be beat. I’m just going over in bandwidth, and at $5 a gig it can get expensive. If I can’t find another for less, I’ll just bump up to their business plan.

Hmm, two new posts from people newly registered to post just on this thread recommending a host, coincidentally the same one. This is why we can’t have open host recommendation threads, it’s too fishy. Going to have to take the wiki page down too.

Allusion, I am the second one that mentioned icdsoft. I mentioned it in response to seahorse’s recommendation, since I already use them. I’m also the one that started the thread. I registered specifically to find a new host and ask about WP, not to promote a webhost.

If asking for hosting recommendations that work with WP is inappropriate, then delete the thread. If it’s because I registered today to post this thread, then that’s just dumb. My reasoning is in the initial post.

Martlet, Allusion wasn’t accusing you of anything, and you have done no wrong. But you have to agree that is fishy when new users register to respond to commercial topics such as hosting providers. I’ve actually seen a few instances when a hosting provider has registered with this board just to post about their host. What’s worse is that sometimes they don’t have all the features required to run WordPress (like FTP access, or in absence of that, some way to install WordPress).

I just registered today because I was posting anonymously for quite sometime. Now I have to register to post. I can assure you that I’m not a bot nor am I paid by the company to post those things. *shrug* But I removed it. Wouldn’t want anyone jumping to inaccurate conclusions.

I use sitelutions for my domain names, no trouble there, but haven’t used them for hosting. I use serverfly for my space, and again no problems at all. I also got just a WP package at pete99 for only $12 yr and that works good too. It’s not listed on his main page but if you go through ordering you will see it listed in the drop down. I don’t remember the specifics of what you get.

Sorry about that then, it just seemed suspicious. It has happened a few times before, otherwise I wouldn’t be wary of it. Sorry again.

I use small-packages.com. A program called Fantastico is set up in the Cpanel, and it will install WordPress for you, as well as setting up the database. Takes even less than five minutes that way.
I am more than happy there.
