• Can I install WP on a .mobi domain?

The reason I asked is that I tried to install using Fantastico on Hostgator & got the error message below (I’ve installed many WP and have never had this problem), and the only thing I can think of that I did differently this time is the .mobi domain.

    Error establishing a database connection

This either means that the username and password information in your wp-config.php file is incorrect or we can’t contact the database server at localhost. This could mean your host’s database server is down.

    * Are you sure you have the correct username and password?
    * Are you sure that you have typed the correct hostname?
    * Are you sure that the database server is running?

If you’re unsure what these terms mean you should probably contact your host. If you still need help you can always visit the WordPress Support Forums.

    Thanks

  • It shouldn’t make any difference what the domain suffix is. That error is just telling you that WordPress can’t connect to the MySQL database. The most likely causes are:
    1. The database wasn’t set-up
    2. There is a typo when entering the username, password or hostname.

I have never used a Fantastico install but I would assume it does all that for you. If so then you need to contact your host to get the issue sorted. If you edit the config file manually as part of the set-up process then you need to go back and correct the typo.
