WP installs ok, then logging in to admin page wrecks it

  • Quick backstory: Site was up and running for months with no issue, then suddenly went down for no apparent reason. Something plugin related perhaps? I attempted to fix it with no luck, so I backed up the blog and deleted it completely.

    Reinstalled WordPress through GoDaddy’s hosting control panel. That’s fine. Page shows up.

    Reinstalled the theme files I purchased from templatemonster.com, including the plugin files, .htacess, etc. Upload dump file to new database. Site loads fine with demo images etc on new theme. Everything is ok.

    I go to log in to the wordpress admin page and get the following error message:

    ‘Fatal error: Call to undefined function get_current_blog_id() in /home/content/34/6826634/html/wp-includes/user.php on line 655’

    This message also now shows up on the website home page. I understand that that points to the user.php file etc but I don’t have the foggiest idea what to do with that information. *sigh.

    Thanks for any help, I’m thoroughly frustrated. This post is the culmination of many nights of aggravation.

    Download wordpress from www.ads-software.com, unzip it on your local computer and re-upload all the wordpress files via FTP. Let FTP program to overwrite existing files. It should fix the problem.

    switch back to twenty ten by rename the theme you activated and see if you still problem may the theme is not compatible with the version you using.

    Hi Lyle – I’m having a similar problem – did the above answers work for you, because they didn’t for me.
    For me, I updated a theme, went into the dashboard and the site, touched up a few preferences and everything was fine. I then had to make one change to a the wp-includes>general-template.php (a grammatical change nothing really code related, and something I’ve done with every other manipulation of this blog) and that’s when I got this user/655 error.

    Try Updating your theme or maybe contact the support from where you purchased your theme. They will help you with the support. Also download the latest 3.1.1 wordpress from the official site.

    The theme was made by me – it’s a variation of twentyten. and I am running 3.1.1

    @arangela There is nothing in wp-includes that you need to change as that is a core folder and you should not make in change in core files as when you update they will be over written.

    Replace the file you made change in from fresh download.

    The only place you can a change is in themes and if you using twenty ten theme then make child theme so you do not loose your changes when you update.
