• Using WP 3.1.2

    Problem
Hi, it appears that when I add an image to WordPress it is duplicating it.

I went to (WP > Dashboard > Media) and deleted any images I wasn’t using but then when I looked on the server in the folder: (public_html > wp-content > uploads > 2011 > 05) there are tons of images there (looks like duplicates) and it appears like it is making many different sizes for each image and I didn’t do that that.

What’s going on? Is thus normal and won’t this quickly use up all of my server space?

  • It creates the images in multiple sizes according to what you have entered in Settings > Media.

Yes, ok but in (Settings > Media) I have set WP to create 3 images (Thumbnail, Medium and Large Images) (see link)

But when I look in my WP folder I see 16 different sizes of the same image. This can’t be right? (see link)

Note that they all have different sizes specified in the file names. Did you change the settings and then re-upload them?

Also, that imageshack site launches all kinds of crazy pop-ups. I will never go there again.

No I only uploaded one image. Any ideas how I can fix this and how I can do this going forward so I don’t run inot this problem?

Yeah, sorry. That’s why I don’t like image shack. I am looking for another uploader site that doesn’t have all the popups but haven’t found one yet. Seems like they all have that.

Your current theme may be using custom post thumbnails.

Hi and thanks esmi. Can you explain what you mean. Sorry but quite new to WP. ??

Some themes contain instructions for WP to create extra thumbnail images of various sizes. Perhaps that’s what yours is doing. To test this out, switch to the Twenty Ten theme, upload an image and then check how many additional images were created. with Twenty Ten, only the images configured in Settings -> Media should be generated.

Thanks esmi. ?? I contacted the developer and he said the theme is in fact generating extra images with a whole slew of different sizes. So now I need to find out how to create only 3 images. The thumbnail, large and medium image. Sigh…

Do you have evidence that the theme generated image sizes are ;using up all your server space’? The main culprits, file size wise, tend to be the original files themselves. Making sure you reduce those before uploading might be more effective.

    Hello.

I would like to prevent this from happening.

I am trying to use a recent images widget in the side bar, but after an image is uploaded, it shows two of each image – one the thumbnail and the other full size.

Is there a way to either stop uploading like this and upload one image but show a resized image as a thumbnail, or have the thumbs saved to a thumbs folder? At the moment they get stuck in the same folder? I tried the suggestion to alter the size values in media–>settings to 0, as well as changing to the twenty 10 theme – neither have worked.

    Any help will be appreciated.

    Greg
