After using WP Mail SMTP to get my Client ID and Client Secret, I’m receiving the following authorization error from Gmail:

    Error 403: access_denied
The developer hasn’t given you access to this app. It’s currently being tested and it hasn’t been verified by Google. If you think you should have access, contact the developer ([email protected]).
    Learn more
    Request Details
    ? access_type=offline
    ? response_type=code
    ? redirect_uri=https://connect.wpmailsmtp.com/google/
    ? state=https://luana-lamour.nl/wp-admin/options-general.php?page=wp-mail-smtp&tab=auth
    ? client_id=284053503991-6vf8at0k4vatp3m6qlenmrdn82qg6nhj.apps.googleusercontent.com
    ? include_granted_scopes=true
    ? prompt=consent
    ? scope=https://mail.google.com/

As you can read from above the error message is asking me to contact the developer to ([email protected]) to gain access, but I am that developer.

I have installed and set up WP Mail SMTP many, many times and have never received this error. I’m stumped.

  • I’m having the same issue. The problem now, however, is that once I got past the point where it was asking about ‘testing’, I cannot get back to that area where I can change it to “published”. Under Activity in my dashboard, I can actually see where it says “Published State: Testing”, but I cannot change it. There isn’t a link or an obvious way to get back there again. Any thoughts?

    Actually, I found it…
Under the main dashboard, bottom left, under “Getting Started”
Click: “API Explore and enable APIs”
Then fourth option down, “OAuth consent screen”

That’s where you can change it from testing to production.

But then… when I went back to the orange button in wordpress saying “Allow plugin to send emails…” I got message about it being unverified (or something). But I got around that by going to advanced, and then “go to wpmailsmtp” anyway. That’s when I was able to hit the “allow” button.

Good heavens. It works now (I can get emails from my site). I really like WP Mail SMTP. Hopefully they can update their documentation for getting gmail to work soon, to account for the new ‘testing’ thing google has.

    Hi @claken,

thank you for providing a detailed description on where to find the “Published State” settings.

I’m glad you were able to configure Gmail successfully. We’ll update the documentation as soon as possible.

    Have a nice day!

    @capuderg

You need to go to the OAuth settings on the left side in your developers console. Then publish your app so that it goes from “test” to “production”.

Thank you, this worked as I was having the same issue. Here is a Screenshot of where it was at: https://imgur.com/H81P1WS

I also added my email to the test users group, and the install completed. I’m a bit concerned that this is just a work around and not a solution.

    That helped me too! Thanks

I had the same issue, and had to do both fixes suggested:

    1. Log out of other gmail accounts (I had forgotten about this one)
    2. Put the app into “production”

I can appreciate that it can be hard to keep up with Google ?? I hope the documentation can be updated soon! Thanks!

    Hello,
I’m getting exactly the same problem. I have tried every single option mentioned in this thread with no success.
I am totally desperate. I have been losing clients by not having the contact form properly configured. I don’t know what else to do.
