• Our web hosts (Justhost) are in the process of switching to PHP 5.4 and removing PHP 5.2 as an option. Having temporarily switched to test compatibility I have found that our websites theme ‘WP Remix 3’ does not work with PHP 5.4. I will explain what exactly doesn’t work below but basically the theme is no longer supported by the developers so we really need help to update the code to work with PHP 5.4. I have been told by Justhost that it can often just be minor tweaks to a themes code to get it working with PHP 5.4.

    The problem:
I followed Justhosts advice of testing compatibility by switching to PHP 5.4 already and although our website appears to still display/function just fine on the front end, I have discovered that the WordPress admin backend has issues – I can log in but only the side menus are displayed?
If I click on a menu item (e.g. ‘Pages’) it seems to process the request fine but just doesn’t display anything other than the side menus! This is the case for any of the side menus I click on, pages, posts, comments, etc – all load supposedly fine but just without any content being displayed?? The only menu items that work are any of our plugins – these display content as normal.

We are looking for someone who can fix the WP Remix theme to work with PHP 5.4 before our hosting company forces us to switch permanently to PHP 5.4.

Look forward to hearing from people out there who can help with this.

  • Hi there,

are you sure that the theme is responsible for this? Did you try switching to some other theme to check if the problem goes away?

I did get a response from the theme developers saying that it was not compatible with PHP 5.4.

I could still try a temporary change of theme – will this not basically remove our website temporarily whilst I switch from our theme to say the standard wordpress one? – Just thinking of what customers will see whilst we try the theme switch.

    Yes it will.

I would suggest to set up a demo site that runs on the same host and try stuff there, to avoid potential problems on your live website.

OK, thanks for confirming that. So, if I switch temporarily to the standard ‘Twenty Eleven’ theme, activate PHP 5.4 and all pages, posts, plugins displays/work fine in the WordPress Admin area then I would know it is my theme that needs its code updating to work with PHP 5.4.

If I make the temporary switch and pages, posts, etc still don’t display/work then it is probably an issue with a plugin that needs updating/removing?

All this is maybe overkill as the theme developer has already stated it doesn’t work with PHP 5.4 but maybe worth trying anyways just to be sure I guess.
