Hi, I’m setting up WP on my local machine (Mac) to stage a site. For this I’ve downloaded MAMP. I’ve created a db called wordpress in phpmyadmin, and a new user with full privileges on the database.

When I enter these values in the set-up screen for wordpress I get an error saying it cannot connect with the database. I’m sure I’ve entered the correct username and password and am using localhost as a server location. And yes, the db-server is running.

    Anyone got any ideas?

  • Hi Ronald,
I use MAMP too. Have you edited your wp-config.php file to connect to this database? You need to enter a few values in there before it will connect. If you open up that file you will see areas where you should update the database name, username, password, and host name. Hope this helps.

Hi MBWD, I’ve tried it, and it does get me one step further but it still will not connect. The setup tells me “The file ‘wp-config.php’ already exists. If you need to reset any of the configuration items in this file, please delete it first. You may try installing now.” When I try installing I just get a blank page.

Usually for username and password on MAMP you use the word ‘root’ (without the quotes). That could be the issue. Try deleting the wp-config file if you have created one, then try the install again using ‘root’ instead of the username and password you created.
