• hi all,

i just tried to get my WP site on my iPhone (don’t know why i didn’t try this earlier) and it comes up with an “m.” prefix as in m.mysite.com but with “we are sorry, no such site available”.

i thought i read something about making my site mobile compatible? is this necessary? how do i do it? why do i need to do it when my ancient non-WP site comes up on my mobile…?

    TIA

  • WordPress doesn’t do this by itself. There is some other configuration set somewhere that’s trying to re-direct you to a differnt URL for mobile devices. There’s a chance that this is from a plugin that you’ve installed, but it’s also possible that it’s part of your .htaccess file or there’s some other modifications that have been done on the server.

As for making your site mobile-compatible, that’s really just ensuring that the design caters for smaller screens and that images are not to big a file size. back in the “old days”, mobiles needed a different site completely because they couldn’t do what they do today. Thankfully, things have changed, even if it’s still hard to get it right for everything.

    thanks.

There’s nothing that stands out in that list. That doesn’t mean that it’s not something in there, just that it’s pretty hard to tell anything from just the names like that. If you go through the plugins and disable them one-by-one and see if it makes a difference then you’ll see which one of these (if any) is causing it.

I would have my money on it not being a plugin though. This is more likely going to be something that’s set up in the .htaccess file or in some other script or server setting.

    hi michael.
can i download the htaccess file? i am not even sure what an “other script” or “server setting” is exactly. i mean, i just did a default install of wordpress.
how do i troubleshoot this? do i contact my web site host?
    THANKS.

If you don’t know what you are looking for, then the best idea would be to contact your hosting company. They will be able to look at the basic settings and see if there’s anything there that coudl be afecting the site like that. If they don’t find anything then you will have to do more digging yourself. They might be able ot look into the scripting a bit for you as well, but this may not be something that they offer and if they do they might want to charge for it as it’s not a part of a normal hosting package. Just something to look out for.

Unfortunately there’s really not a lot more that anyone here can do without full access to your site because we just can’t see how it’s set up beyond the public-facing side of it.

    hi michael.
thank you /so/ much. i got through to APlus and half way explained it and the guy was like “it is coming up with an m in front of it?”. apparently there was some deal when they “installed the mobile app”. funny (or not so) that it has been apparently like that for a year and a half or more.
    anyway, THANK YOU.
