Our site: 506docs.com was running WP 4.2.2. After reading reviews on many similar plug-ins, and 3rd party articles, we decided to download and install the the Smush plug-in.

Fortunately, we performed a website back-up before downloading and activating this plug-in because …

After installing and running this plug in, our web site was totally rearranged and unusable. Main menu links were no longer visible; some icons had been rearranged and repositioned, some icons and content were totally missing; some images had been not only compressed but actually reduced in size … all of this, and more, on just the home page! Trying to navigate to other pages was nearly impossible due to the damage this plug-in caused.

To say this plug-in crashed the site and made the site totally unusable is giving this plug-in too much credit.

Fortunately, we were able to reach the control panel and deactivate and delete the plug in. Too bad there is not a ‘restore’ feature that would restore the web site to its previous condition because we would have saved ourselves hours of time: we had to totally reinstall, from the back-up, all of the pages on the site … a process that consumed several hours.

If one wishes to use this plug-in, our counsel is to ensure you perform a complete website back-up first. Then, ‘good luck.’

If we could rate this plug-in, from our experience we would rate is as zero.

    Hey there fastfac,

Sorry to hear you had such a bad experience with WP Smush, we would definitely like to improve that.

Smush plugin simply strips hidden, bulky information from your images, reducing the file size but it doesn’t actually reduce the image size.

As for your other issues regarding links and icons I’m pretty sure this is related to some sort of a conflict. This is the first time I’m hearing such problems occurred when using WP Smush. If you want to give it another go please let us know so we can investigate this further.

    Thank you for your feedback.

    Best regards,
    Bojan

I’m very sorry for your experience! I know the code of this plugin inside-out and there is absolutely no way it could have been the cause of your issues. It had to be some other plugin or configuration change.

This plugin is activated on >200,000 websites right now, and just yesterday our API smushed 6,082,402 images from 12,770 different WP websites. None of them had your kind of problems.

Of course if you have any more details please let us know and we’ll look into it.
