• A very basic question but needing to understand how upgrades to WP work.
The WP version I am using is the latest (4.1.1), but in my files, I have a variety of versions, none of which is 4.1.1 (they are 3.5.1, 3.2, 3.2 unzipped, 6, and 3.7). I have no idea why I would have so many versions and why I wouldn’t have the 4.1.1. Is there a simple explanation for how upgrades are handled that would explain this? And…can I delete them?

Well, not all files need to be updated, so it’s entirely possible that you have a file which hasn’t been touched.

Are you saying you have duplicates of every file, or just a few which haven’t been touched in a while?

Thanks for your time and help! I think I have old WP files on my hard drive. I found one at the hosting site, but it wasn’t being used. I did get confirmation that my hosting site is using the most current version — 4.1.1. So…I’m guessing that the files on my hard drive are outdated and can be deleted. But I wanted to make sure that I understand how upgrades were made — it seems they all go to the hosting site and not my hard drive. Is this accurate?

Ok, yeah, WordPress is hosted via your hosting provider, the files on your hard drive don’t affect it. ??

When an update is done, the out-of-date files are replaced with new files, and (in rare cases) a second update step will prompt you to push a button to update the database. Nothing goes to your hard drive.
