Dear all, I’m new to WP. Now I’m trying to publish posts in two different WP installations, but when I want to publish something that has a percentage sign (%), it won’t let me publish it (messages: “Publish failed” or “Update failed”, the last one when I have successfully published a text before and then try to add the percentage sign). It’s a little bit scary because it happens the same way in both installations. Is this normal in WP? Is there any workaround to get this working and finally posting something with the percentage sign?

Additional information: it happens to me both in posts as in pages.

  • I testing doing this on WP 5.2.2 and had no problem.
What version are you using? Which editor are you using?
Is the % in some particular place or format?
Do you have a plugin that might be interfering (some use the % to delimit things to replace)?

You can use the Health Check plugin in Troubleshoot Mode to isolate whether it’s a plugin interfering.

Hi Joy, thanks for your answer!

    Let’s go point by point:

I’m using WP 5.2.2 as well.
    My editor is Elementor.
The “%” impedes updating or publishing in whatever place I locate it in the post. I try to write it as a normal text (e.g. argument on the percentage of population who has done something)
This is the list of my activated plugins:
    – Beautiful taxonomy filter
    – Content Views
    – Data Tables Generator by Supsystic
    – Duplicate Page
    – Elementor
    – Essential Addons for Elementor
    – Health Check & Troubleshooting
    – One Click Demo Import
    – Sydney Toolbox
    – Team Members
    – WP Team Showcase and Slider
I have tested deactivating each one of them and trying to publish a post with the “%” sign. WP still won’t let me publish any post with it.
After installing Health Check as you suggested and correcting some easy-to-go issues, there are still these issues:
    – Critical issue
    — Your PHP version requires an update [my current PHP version is 7.0, not that old]
    – Recommended improvements
    — Have a default theme available [I have the theme Sydney activated]
    — Outdated SQL server
    — One or more recommended modules are missing [explicit mention of “bcmath” and “imagick”]
    — Your site does not use HTTPS

I admit I have no idea whether any of these issues could have such an impact.

My second WP installation has pretty much the same behavior, although it is much simple (with two or three plugins). But it is hosted in the same server.

Any idea based on this checklist?

    Thanks again!

OK, you said you deactivated each one, but it was the same. Did you deactivate all at once? Did you deactivate Elementor (or just leave it the whole time)?
If you are only using the Elementor plugin for input, this problem would be with the plugin, not WP.

As for the issues that Health Check showed:
PHP 7.0 is already end-of-life, as of January. See https://php.net/supported-versions.php

If there is a problem with your theme, you don’t have a fallback (default theme).
The SQL server is what runs your database. That is where your content is stored, so if it’s too old, you could have problems.

Hi, sorry for the delay to answer (was on holidays).

Today I opened my admin session and there was an Elementor update. I did it immediately and then tried to published a post with the percentage sign. It worked. So, original problem solved. I will have a look at Elementor documentation to find out whether this was a known bug fixed in this version but, anyway, it was fixed.

As for the other problems (PHP, SQL server etc.), I will talk about this with the IT people.

    Thanks for the help!

Bad luck. Just tried again to update my pages, and the problem is back. Then I tried something very unusual. I tried to update the same page with the same percent sign from another computer… and it worked. Now I don’t have any idea what is going on.

Now I have the definitive solution (at least this is what I believe). The problem is a VPN plugin that gets activated in my browser. Apparently, in combination with WordPress, it doesn’t allow me to publish posts containing the percent sign. As soon as I deactivate the plugin, I can publish as usual. This was a very unexpected behavior.
