Hi All. First time WP user here. I have installed a brand new version of 4.3 locally and that went fine. I have written nothing yet.

I can connect via filezilla no problem and that’s how ive updated plugins so far. However when i then try to update plugins, themes etc via wordpress i get an error.

My host is 10.57.125.* and when i try to connect using sftp it fails and shows me the ip address and port 21?? I have tried using ftp instead and that also fails.

Am i missing something obvious here?

  • What local server and operating system?

On ‘normal’ local installs on the Mac and Windows, FTP is not required to upload plugins or anything else … just use your system’s file manager … it’s local after all ??

That said, on these local installs, just use the WP Dashboard’s Plugin and Themes sections to install and update the respective items.

    HI Lyle,

This is a Turnkey Linux VM hosted on a VMWare ESXi host.

I have tried using the WP dashboard plugin and themes section to update and thats when i get the problem.

There isnta problem with connectivity as such because i can connect and download updates then upload using filezilla.

It just doesnt work through WP itself.

    Regards.

    Thanks for the update ??

Unfortunately, I have no experience with Linux in this regard. Perhaps others here that do will step in.

    Cheers!

Did you create a user on the VM? If so, then you will need to edit Apache’s httpd.conf file to change the User and Group direcives to that user. You will also need to do a CHOWN on the document root directory to change the ownership of all files to that user and its group.

If you did not create a user, then I sueggest you do that and follow the steps above.

Also, please make sure to use FTP through that user and not as root. Otherwise the file ownerships will be messed up and the problem will occur again at some point in the future.

Finally, if you like to live life on the edge, you can change Apache to run as the root user. It would solve all your problems, but to say it’s a dangerous configuration would be an understatement.
