    according to the documentation:

    menu_id (string) The ID that is applied to the ul element which forms the menu. Default is the menu slug, incremented.

    But in my theme, it’s adding the ID to the div surrounding the UL, not the UL itself.

    I need this ID to be applied to the UL like the documentation says.

    turns out it was because it was the default menu. After I went into the dashboard and actually created a menu, it started working as expected.
