Just noticed I was coming to my clients site to update her WP install with a Yoast update and instead got greeted by the site going down and the DB needed repairs. I successfully repaired most of the database, except for a wp_options error like this:

wp_options: Wrong block with wrong total length starting at…

I came to WP’s Fixing WordPress forum and found this post which seems to connect it to WordFence. So I deactivated the plugins, everything then was fine, reactivated them, problem came back. Deactivated WordFence and problem is gone again. So it seems WordFence is the culprit.

How can I fix this so I can keep using WordFence?

The page I need help with: [log in to see the link]

Hi @databell96, thanks for reaching out to us.

The most likely cause of the “Wrong block with wrong total length…” error is database corruption of some kind, whether that’s a hardware failure at some point while it was being queried or an issue during an operation at one moment in time. You can repair tables in phpmyadmin, restore wp_options from a backup when this wasn’t an issue or perhaps contact your host’s support channels to see if they can resolve it just in case there’s a still problem with the hardware running your site that might cause this to reoccur.

With Wordfence installed on a huge number of sites worldwide, this is the first case I have personally seen, so is unlikely to be an issue that Wordfence caused but certainly one it might highlight. Wordfence scans will check your database contents and may require read/write access to specific tables, so if corruption is stopping an action in the background then disabling Wordfence will also suppress the error.

If repairing/restoring the wp_options table continues to cause problems and your host can’t find anything wrong on your server, by all means get back to me and let me know what you’ve found out.

    Thanks,

    Peter.
