wp_options table gone missing

Hi there;

we have an issue regarding this site of ours;
at one point we got a database connection error we could not recover from. The normal way of fixing the db failed. When we looked via php_my_admin we found the wp_options table had gone completely missing.
Knowing this, we copied the table from a backup back and it seemed to work fine for a couple days. But this morning we found the issue had returned. This time no backup available so we lost some progress unfortunately.
We tried checking the plugins; but no new plugins had been installed.

Is this a known issue and how can we fix this?
