wp_postmeta, panels_data : use json instead of serialize ?

Hello,
Why not json_encode “panels_data” values instead of serialize ? That would avoid issues after search/replace of url in post content for exemple. I know there are solution but is there really a performance boost vs more straightforward json data ?
Thanks for the plugin anyway. I was looking for a lightweight editor to juste create row/columns and then add custom widget/shortcodes into the blocks. I think this is definitively what i was looking for.
