WPBakery Visual Composer Updating

I’m running WordPress 4.5.2 with Vertex theme and am not able to get WPBakery Visual Composer to update automatically (or otherwise) to the latest 4.12 version. Everytime I click update automatically, it updates, and then resets itself, indicating that it needs updating again. I’ve tried installing the updated zip file of the Visual Composer plug-in, but that doesn’t work either because it says the folder/file is already there.
