WPCACHEHOME must be set in config file.

Is it set in your wp-config.php ?
It is just below or above the line that defines WP_CACHE?

/** Sets up WordPress vars and included files. */
require_once(ABSPATH . 'wp-settings.php');

/** Establish WP SuperCache **/
define( ‘WPCACHEHOME’, ‘https/www.mysite.com/httpdocs/wp-content/plugins/wp-super-cache/’ );

I have just noticed, however, that this directory is empty??

The WPCACHEHOME define has to be above the line that requires the wp-settings.php

Definitely. The plugin shouldn’t even be able to run if plugins/wp-super-cache is empty. Just try install it again I think.
