I’m on WP Engine and would like to serve AVIF/WebP without using the <PICTURE> tag.

I’m familiar with the changes that must be made to the NGINX mime.types and configuration files. I have it working correctly in a local environment.

When I contacted WP Engine support, even after chatting with a “senior tech”, they don’t know what I am talking about. They aren’t familiar with the mime.types file and don’t seem to grasp the concept of adding blocks before and inside of the server directive.

Have you had anyone get this working with WP Engine? Any tips for what I could tell them to get this done?

Hi Dustin!

I did a quick search in our ticket system to find other customers with the same issue, but unfortunately I couldn’t find anyone who clearly said it worked. That’s not to say it’s impossible, but unfortunately that’s all we can do.

My guess is that WP Engine is using a very customized NGINX environment and they’re unable or not sure how to apply the code snippets.

May I suggest that you try our ShortPixel Adaptive Images plugin?

Just thought I would update this thread…

I could never get the NGINX configuration working with ShortPixel and WP Engine. Testing isn’t easy because I can’t quickly try different configurations. All changes must go through their support chat.

I did get a custom NGINX configuration working for webp on WP Engine with a different plugin:

I would assume something similar could work for ShortPixel but I couldn’t figure it out.

I decided to abandon the NGINX configuration route because according to the author of that plugin, that method can’t be used with Cloudflare caching unless you have access to the Cloudflare Zone ID and API Token.

We use WP Engine’s Global Edge Security which is powered by Cloudflare but doesn’t give us access to the Zone ID & API Token. So as far as I can tell images would stop being cached if I was able to get the NGINX configuration working.

For now, using the PICTURE tag seems to work ok for the most part and our images are still cached.
