WPML support

WPML actually has a native method to do this.

Please let me know if there are any limitations you experience with that approach that you would like us to potentially enhance, or if any conflicts arise.

Hi, thanks for the quick reply. Maybe I am totally wrong here but I don’t think my usecase is possible with wpml alone. I would need a setup like this:

domain.com/pageA with WPML translating to domain.com/en/pageA
seconddomain.com/pageB with WPML translating to seconddomain.com/en/pageB

So I would need the domain mapping system to manage my two domains to map them to certain pages and WPML to translate these pages with subfolders for different languages.

I would suggest contacting WPML to double check if their integration will support that at this point in time. They very well might, perhaps with some customization.

In terms of whether our plugin can do it now, the answer is unfortunately not yet.

However, I have taken note of this specific request for our development pipeline to consider when we get to this integration in the coming months.

Hi, thanks for your answer. WPML said that they (out of the box) don’t support this feature and also said that it might work with some customization. Seems to be a real edge case.

I will check back with your plugin and hope support for multilingual plugins will be added. If it would work easier with another like TranslatePress or Polylang I’d be willing to try them as well …

No updates yet! However, it should be possible to map a domain per language with with WPML natively, after discussing the feature with the founder of WPML at a recent WordCamp.

Besides that, the current workaround is to have duplicated pages for each language, rather than dynamic translation for each page.

So, it is currently possible to set up language per domain.

We won’t be making any changes to this mechanism for at least 3-6 months, and that’s not a guaranteed timeframe.

unfortunately not. My solution was to set up separate pages and deal with the chaos of managing duplicated content. It’s working but I’m not that happy with maintainability.

Thanks for the feedback, I appreciate that this request is probably more to do with the Multilanguage plugins. I will reach out to them.

I have used the domain per language option in the past with Polylang and WPML.

I am trying to achieve something similar to what @zaphodbeeblebrox01 wants though.

To demonstrate the goal with a post called ‘My Post’, having two languages (en,de) and two domains (domain-en.com, domain-de.com), these are the expected urls for the My Post pages:

domain-en.com with a default language set to en
domain-en.com/my-post/
domain-a.com/de/mein-post/

domain-de.com with a default language set to de
domain-de.com/mein-post/
domain-de.com/en/my-post/

I will reach out to the author of Polylang plugin regarding this request.
