WPMU new install produces 404 posts

@andrea, you are totally right about that, but is there some way to clear it. There must be some cache somewhere that can be cleared without having to do a reinstall. If it were easy to do the reinstall and move everything, I would, but I’m trying to avoid that.

We can’t tell you what to flush cause you aren’t telling us what you have.

Can you please list your plugins? Otherwise everything from here out becomes vague. My guess would be that either your server’s DNS cache needs to be hard flushed or you have a caching plugin that needs to be flushed, or you have a plugin conflict. But I’m guessing.

Also if you can answer Andrea’s question about how you did the mapping, that would help us a lot.

@ipstenu, I’m not avoiding tell you what I have. I have all of the following plugins installed and turned off:

For the main site, I have the following:

As far as how I did the mapping, yes, I screwed it up. I can’t tell you what I did wrong. All I know is that I didn’t do things in the right order. I tried to set them all up through the main site instead of main site, sub-site, main site, sub-site, etc.

And as far as the idea that the problem is with the DNS, that’s not possible because the settings are completely identical and everything else is set up correctly and working with all other sub-sites.

And, by the way, if the problem were with anything other than the mapping, wouldn’t the pages also be screwed up? Why is it just the posts? My guess is that there is some part of the loop that has to do with posts that is screwed up.

Turn it off please.
Clear out the cache files on the server.
Remove any reference to the mapped site from the database, if there is any.

As I did say, it was off, but I have taken additional precautions and turned it off on all sites and uninstalled it. I also cleared the cache using that plugin for this site.

Would it be ill-advised to delete the folders that represent the site installs that are not in use plus this site as a way of wiping this clean and reinstalling/remapping the site?

The sites are virtual. there are no folders unless you uploaded media to the sb site. then you’d only be deleting the media.

You need to look for cache folders on the server and nuke those.

No, it would not really do anything, because the plugin does not uninstall information from the database.

You also need to start looking in the database.

And I’m still getting redirected t the mapped domain. remove all trace of it from the server side. UNpark it. f it is unmapped correctly within wordpress, i should be getting redirected to your main site. I’m not.

I really don’t know how to “look in the database” as I’m sure you probably mean using MySQL or some other tool to see records. I wouldn’t know what to do.

I think I’m just going to need to blow it away and start over.

Use phpmyadmin or whatever your host has given you to go look. you’ll see all the tables and fields and be able to do searches.

Andrea, I did figure that’s what you meant, but I’m just not too familiar with it. I’ve used it once and found it to be tedious to learn. I’m sure I’ll learn it eventually, but I just don’t have the time at the moment to do that. I’m sure that since I’m moving everything to multi-site that I’m going to have to learn this stuff since the only backup strategy that I have read that works involves PHPMyAdmin and other things like ssh for recovery. I can’t say that the balance of time it would take for me to start over would be less than the time it would take me to do the necessary poking/prodding you suggest. I think there can only be one guaranteed way to resolve this as there is too much guesswork in going to “look in the database.” I’m amazed there just isn’t some sort of way to flush the cache and reset my pointing config.

just go to whatever db tool you have (probably phpmyadmin), click on the search tab and plunk int he mapped domain. remove all instances of it. backup your db first. which you can also do in phpmyadmin.

Should be, though I don’t know if it searches the WHOLE DB or just the posts.

Do make a database backup before you try it ??

you’re not replacing anything, you;re removing the domain mapping record for the one that does not work.
