Seems like there’s a funny bug occurring I’m hoping you can help with:

The plugin has started pulling in what I believe may be the incorrect aspect ratio for the thumbnails. My two most recent video posts have thumbnails with thick, black bars across the top and bottom, and they’re not the correct size. (They’re the correct height, but not the correct width — even with the black bars.)

I use the same custom Thumbnail template via Youtube each time, so I don’t think that’s the problem.

Also strange is that on the posts that are importing incorrectly — ONE of my custom image sizes is accurate. The rest of the sizes for that post have bars across the top and bottom.

    Any suggestions?

One other thing to note: I read in the FAQ that the 4:3 aspect ratio file will sometimes be used if the youtube video is not in HD. But that isn’t the case with my video – it’s 1080p. (Plus the fact that one of my custom image sizes does, indeed, import correctly is suspect.)

    Thanks!

Well, I feel dumb. But I figured it out. Here’s what happened in case anyone else has an issue.

Long story short… I unknowingly altered my photoshop template (that I use to make the Youtube Thumbs) to a smaller size at some point in recent past.

    • My original size was 5120×2880. High res. These thumbnails import perfectly using the plugin.
    • The smaller size was 1200×675.

Unaware of this change in my file size, I recently uploaded two Thumbnails to YouTube using that smaller size.

To fix the “black border” issue, I recreated the problematic custom thumbnails at the larger size and re-uploaded them you YouTube. All images imported without any letterboxing.

That being said — the videos themselves were in HD. But since I use custom thumbnails, the thumbnails themselves need to be HD-sized as well to prevent the black borders from occurring in WordPress.

The only thing I haven’t figured out is why, even when the plugin was importing letterboxed thumbnails, one of my custom sizes still came through perfectly. Go figure.

Anyway. Hope this is helpful to others. If your thumbnails are suddenly coming through with black bars on the top and bottom, check and make sure that your custom thumbnails uploaded to YouTube are in HD size.

Tip: You can check this by visiting the following URL. Replace “XXXXXX” with your Youtube video’s ID. If a full-size photo appears, you’re good-to-go. If it doesn’t, you might need to upload a larger custom thumbnail to Youtube:
