wrong program for download

What operating system are you using? Windows or Mac? You just need to change the file associations but the process is different depending upon OS.

Windows vista.

Right click the file that isn’t opening properly. Select ‘Properties’. Look a few lines down for ‘Opens with’. Now click ‘Change’ and select an appropriate application for the file. If you are talking about the WP .zip file you need to select something like Winzip. I use AlZip. If you are trying to open a PHP file, you need to use a text editor. Notepad will work but Crimson, PSPad, or Jedit will work better.

ok, I know I can open zip files, and because I stupidly tried to open the zip file with the notepad….
So I retraced my steps, and now I cannot find the durn winzip in my programs! This is just not my day!

Maybe try this to reset Vista’s built in unzip facility.

Well I have restored the zip application, thanks so much for sending me to Bonobo, that site helped a lot.
Now the problem is…..
The program WordPress is on my desktop. It is zipped. When I open it, it becomes unzipped, however, when I right click it (the unzipped version, which is still a folder in the zipped folder) still wants to open with my damn picture it! I right click on the folder (again, in the zipped folder) but I do not get an option to open with!
Help, I am so over this!

In Windows Vista once you open the zip file look up at the top menu bar, it should say “Extract all files” click that and the default should be your desktop/wordpress (or similar), and show “Show extracted files when complete” selected. Now click extract files, it will extract them to a folder on your desktop and then open the extracted folder. After that you can FTP to your hosting server.

Thanks, I was able to open everything in notepad (how very exciting, read sarcasm).
I am not sure that I have all the steps taken, I am trying to use word press alone, rather than the wordpress default that 1and1 gives me for my blog site. I changed all the information it requested, and when I hit upload, it uploaded everything that was already at the site.
Now I really want to change the theme, but I do not see where I can go while I am on my blog site. Do I need to go the the wordpress site and choose a theme then upload it to my site?
Well, I believe I just answered my question. But If you realize I have not….
