• Hi,

I used to have a main site (cotonvillagehall.org.uk) and a staging site, running under WP 6.0. Everything fine and I did a few developments on the staging site. I then switched to the main site and updated it to WP 6.0.1 and updated all my plugins. Now, I can still use the staging site OK and direct access to cotonvillagehall.org.uk from a browser still works, but when I try to log in to the main site WP dashboard, I just get a WSOD.

By renaming my theme directory (hayden) via ftp, I can log in to the main back end and use the dashboard. Running the main website then gives a WSOD with the message that hayden is not present. If I rename the theme to hayden, I can stay in the dashboard but I can’t access any of the dashboard sections (pages, contact forms etc)

The Java console shows me:

GET https://www.cotonvillagehall.org.uk/wp-admin/post.php?post=861&action=edit 500 /wp-admin/post.php?post=861&action=edit:1
GET https://www.cotonvillagehall.org.uk/favicon.ico 500 favicon.ico:1

(I don’t use a favicon.) I’ve tried the following without success:

1. wp-config hadn’t been updated during the WP update (it had in previous updates) so I updated it. No change.

2. I renamed the plugins directory (to e.g. xxxplugins) via ftp. No change. I then renamed each individual plugin. No change.

3. I renamed the theme (hayden) directory and can now navigate around the dashboard and do things. When I run the website, I get the WSOD and an error that hayden isn’t present. The dashboard showed me (red circle) that a contact form 7 form needed updating. It didn’t but there was a fix-me button which I hit and the red circle went away. I also updated the two plugins that it said needed updating. Fine. When I switched back to using hayden, the red circles had reappeared.

4. Hitting ClearCache on the dashboard just hangs the dashboard – I just get an ever-rotating circle.

5. I renamed /htdocs/.hl-access out of the way but still got the WSOD and the two errors above.

I’ve searched the forums and googled till I dropped and have found lots of WSOD cases but none that are the same. Does anyone have any ideas ?

Thanks

Gerry

After renaming the hayden theme directory, head over to APPEARANCE, and change the theme to one of the default themes (this should happen automatically when you go to APPEARANCE, but do so yourself if you don’t see any notice that the active theme cannot be found so one of the default themes has been activated).

Standing by for feedback.

Thanks for your reply, George.

I renamed the hayden directory and went to Appearance. There were no alternative themes so I installed twenty twenty-two. I clicked on Configure and got this:

<list of menu options>

HOME

This block has encountered an error and cannot be previewed.

[button color=”#255789″ url=”https://www.cotonvillagehall.org.uk/booking-enquiries/” label=”MAKE A BOOKING REQUEST” ptag=”true”]

[button color=”#255789″ url=”https://www.cotonvillagehall.org.uk/availability-calendar/” label=”CHECK ROOM AVAILABILITY” ptag=”true”]

This is my home page contents (at cotonvillagehall.org.uk).

Is it of any help or do you want more info.

btw – I’ve checked the Home Page on the main site and the staging site and, apart from the different URLs, which you would expect, they look identical.

I finally tracked down the problem. A logfile in /htdocs/<staging site>/wp-content/uploads/wp-staging/logs showed that there was a corrupt functions.php file in the hayden theme. Correcting that brings me back to normal. Thanks for your suggestion as I wouldn’t have tracked it down otherwise.
