On a side note, is there a particular reason that this is needed?

I would check ‘Settings’ from the dashboard, there you can enter the domain of the site. It may be that you don’t have the www. nested in your URLs.

I’ve also read that WP strips all www. in the address. I never care either way because it resolves my site, but I thought you may want to know that it may be something in the core of WP that is just not geared towards this application of URL usage.

not true – wordpress doesn’t care – this is a web server deal
or you just need to adjust the 2 url’s in
    admin – settings – general
