Hello, I’m trying to download www.ads-software.com to my hard drive so I can play with it with a view to migrating from Dreamweaver.
I am following instructions on the ‘Test Driving WordPress’ page (link to page is above) under the section heading ‘Installing WordPress on Your Windows Desktop’.
I’ve downloaded xampp to the C: drive but Step 3. says “Start XAMPP from c:\xampplite or c:\xampp.”
However when I type c:\xampp into the run bar, it doesn’t open anything, it simply opens the list of files on the C drive. Is this correct?
The file ‘xampp-control.exe’ is highlighted so I assume I should click on this. This then opens the Control Panel. Probably all good so far…
However step 5. then says “In your browser, go to https://localhost/xampp.”
My attempts to go this give me a constant ‘problem loading page’.
Here is what I am doing:-
    – open Firefox and type ‘https://localhost/xampp’ into address bar (not the google search bar), press enter, then get ‘problem loading page’ message.
I assume I’m on the wrong track somewhere basic so I’d appreciate any direction.
    Thanks

The page I need help with: [log in to see the link]

  • I haven’t run it on Windows in awhile, but if I recall, the control panel just shows you the current state and buttons to start and stop the various pieces. You need to click on Apache and MySQL to start them. That is your local server and database.

Thanks Joy, I’ll follow that through.
I’ve since realized that I posted this in the wrong forum as there is one specifically for Local Hosts so I’ve just re-posted it there.
I’ve also downloaded a program (I think it’s a program) called Local by Flywheel that seems to be a much easier way of achieving the same result. enjoy…
