The Xampp window does not have the red X’ or check marks described in the tutorial, however I can run non-database php sites on the Xampp server. How do I set up my configuration to connect to my database?

The easiest way is to go into phpMyAdmin and create a new database user with a new connected database. That way you’ll know the values and that the database actualyl exists.

And, it’s normal for phpMyAdmin to not ask for a password when you’ve instaleld it wth XAMPP. XAMPP sets up access as root by default, because it’s really only meant to be a local system, so the normal security isuses aren’t (quite as) important.

thanks, that worked! I probably should not ask this because everything is working, but when I try to make new databases it says ‘Processing Request’ and then hangs. Do I need to enable something or open a port or maybe even add something to a config file to allow me to create databases?

actually the whole database is read only… how do I fix that?
