xls downloading in different, unreadable format

When checking orders and then selecting ‘export as XLS’ in my orders tab it downloads as xls but if I do export in the export orders tab it downloads in some strange format that I cannot open. Even when checking the XLS option.
At first it used to work just fine, what can the problem be?
