Hi, I have the free Yoast SEO plugin installed and I am using it to generate a xml site map. After checking the site with RYTE I am getting an error message that the sitemap is not referenced in the robots.txt file. Should it be here and if so how do I place a reference to it in the Robot.txt file please? Thanks in advance.

@aorrow If you want to add a directive to your robots.txt file to specify the location of your sitemap you can do so by adding the following line:
    ?
    Sitemap: https://YOURDOMAINNAME.COM/sitemap_index.xml

You would of course need to replace ‘YOURDOMAINNAME.COM‘ with your site’s actual domain.
    ?
?You can edit the robots.txt file by performing the following steps:

? In WordPress, go to SEO>Tools
      ? Click on ‘File Editor
? Under ‘robots.txt‘ and beneath ‘Edit the content of your robots.txt:‘ is a field from which you can directly edit your robots.txt file
? After making any changes to the file, click ‘Save changes to robots.txt

We also have more information on this and editing the robots.txt file here: https://kb.yoast.com/kb/how-to-edit-robots-txt-through-yoast-seo/

    Thanks @devnihil

I have followed your instruction however I do not see ‘File Editor’ I only see ‘Import and Export’ and ‘Bulk Editor’ I am using free version of the plugin. Could the ‘File Editor’ be an option under the paid version only?

    Hello @aorrow,

If you’re not seeing the File editor options in WordPress > SEO > Tools, it is due to incompatible permissions. Your server doesn’t have the write permission for Yoast SEO to edit the robots.txt and as such you’re not seeing the option. If the robots.txt file is not writable or your WordPress install has disabled file editing, the previous steps may fail. Optionally, you can edit at the server level.

I see that’s very helpful thank you @maybellyne.
