• I’ve came across this error while running backup to Dropbox.

WARNING: File “/home/mysite/public_html/xmlrpc.php” is not readable!
ERROR: Dropbox API: (502) Invalid response.
ERROR: Dropbox API: (52) Empty reply from server

My web host confirmed that they have changed the file permission to 000 which is not readable.
They claimed that xlmrpc.php is vulnerable to DOS attack and causing heavy load to web server, so it is advisable to disable this file.
My understanding that xlmrpc.php is needed to interact with application requiring API.

So, is it neccesary to set file permission for xmlrpc.php as 644 to run backup with Dropbox?

  • No the file issen’t necessery for backup. you can exclude it on files tab of the bacjup jeb so the warning will not upper again.

The Dropbox message must have an other couse.

Ok understood, I’ll leave the file excluded from backup.

How about the Dropbox error? Why is the error appearing?
