• Hi – Was wondering what advantages Yahoo offered over the free wordpress.com service?

Also, is it possible to customise templates when hosting with yahoo, or are you limited to the pre-made themes?

    Thanks

    Laur

  • I know that many people don’t like Yahoo hosting. I’m not an expert, but here’s my take on it.

So far for my purposes, I like Yahoo Hosting. The price has come down. I pay $8.96 per month. You get 5GB of Disk Space – 200GB of data transfer – 200 e-mail addresses.

You also get 100 subdomains, and it supports PHP, Perl, MySQL, and FTP. You can upgrade at any time to 20GB of Disk Space; 500GB of Data transfer; and 1,000 e-mail addresses, and beyond.

WordPress is also included, as well as two other pieces of blogging software. It’s all built-in and easily customizable. You also get SiteBuilder for creating a Web site or you can use your own software and it has a built-in HTML editor. It also has built-in Forum (message board) software, and it’s easy to add a Java Chat Room.

Maybe if you’re doing it for a living and you have a site with tons of visitors and you’re a professional; then there might be some limitations to Yahoo hosting that a professional would have problems with.

But for basic, every day server needs for an amateur or intermediate user, I think Yahoo Hosting is very good.

I’ve used Yahoo hosting for over a year and never had any downtime. I’ll have to agree with some of the previous comments that their customer service leaves a little to be desired. It’s kind of the luck of the draw to get someone who is knowledgeable to help you out. But everything considered I think it’s a good value for the money. I especially like being able to access the raw server logs.

My experiences with Yahoo have been awful, one example:

    WordPress ugrade:

    My latest message to Yahoo:

    Two things:

ONE – Your advertising is misleading. Please send me the contact details of your in-house counsel, as prior to reporting this matter to advertising standards, I would like to pass this matter by him.

TWO – Just to be clear, I am not asking you to upgrade your server software. I am asking if (and when) you will upgrade from WordPress 2.02 to 2.03. This upgrade is recommended by WordPress and Yahoo has committed itself to upgrading WordPress software that it has made available to users.

Thank you for writing to Yahoo! Web Hosting. Thanks once again for
    writing back to me.

The WordPress blog will automatically get upgraded to a new
version only when an upgrade is available through Yahoo! Web Hosting.

At this time Yahoo! Web Hosting has no plans to upgrade to newer
versions of our server software. Based on current user needs, we have
found that the software that is available meets the needs of a majority
of our users. Yahoo! Web Hosting continually evaluates the needs of
users as well as security alerts and technology trends to determine when
    a software upgrade is required.

We thank you for your inquiry regarding upgrades to Yahoo! Web Hosting.
We will forward your inquiry to our Web Hosting Suggestions department
    for further consideration.

Please let me know if you need any further assistance. I am always here
    for you.

Thank you for your understanding. Have a nice day!

Please do not hesitate to reply if you need further assistance.

I use Yahoo and I’m not likely to switch for the time being, so please skip the hosting issues ??
I just wanted to ask how it is possible to “detach” my WP blog from the free one Yahoo provides and put it(upgraded) separately on the same server in some independent folder or something without losing my current posts.
When I tried this I could only see a blank page, so I ‘m sure I did something wrong ??

    cp11141,

Have you thought about installing a whole new install of wordpress and then importing all your old posts/comments?

You can backup all your post/comments easily with phpmyadmin. Yahoo! has an installer that installs phpmyadmin in seconds.

When I tried this I ended up with a blank page.
    I’ll try again

Sorry for replying to my own post, but I can’t find “edit”

My yahoo WP has an “import” function but not an “export” one. How do I export the file I have to import to the separate WP I’m trying to make?? I don’t know how to work with the database backups…
